Illicit camping causes problems

A night spent out in unspoiled natural surroundings like those to be found on Samothrace is certainly a unique experience. You should bear in mind that free camping ( that is outside official sites ) is strictly forbidden all over the country and in cases of contravention the police may intervene. However, the real problem lies elsewhere. There is the problem of basic human needs; the things campers bring with them such as drinks, plastic bottles, tins etc. How will we dispose of all the rubbish of ''modern civilization''? The easiest solution is just to leave it there on the spot where you are camping. Moreover we created this problem ourselves by our extravagant use of plastic like supermarket carrier bags. We all do this, but where does it get us? Does this help conservation of the environment on our island? Would you like to find your own rubbish on your next visit? You too can contribute to the environmental protection of the island. We thank you for respecting this.

Darkness is another problem. One solution is a torch. Another is to light a fire which also creates a romantic atmosphere. This all very well, but fires make the island's inhabitants very uneasy. Why? Because the worst thing that could happen, their nightmare, would be a great fire. Should this happen, all that majestic vegetation would be a thing of the past. All it takes is a carelessly thrown cigarette.

For those who desire to sleep outdoors in natural surroundings, the Samothrace local government has created and runs a special campsite.
