The technic of the weather station of Samothrace

For the realization of the Samothrace weather station a lot of points had to be taken into consideration.
  • The weather station has to deliver data all the time.
  • Data has to be transformed into Internet format, that is HTML formatted files, updated hourly.
  • Data has to be transformed on the WWW.SAMOTHRAKI.COM  host via modem.
  • For the case of a power failure that might arise and which happens rather often her, the whole system must run on independently.
  • For the visual support of measurements a web cam   is to create a picture of the vicinity hourly, during the day.
We decided on an ELV WS 2200 or a Conrad 120271-22 Set professional weather station. We have bought the almost new station at e-bay for 266,- Euro incl. forwarding expenses from a private person. Thus, we managed to save almost 200,- Euro which would have been the costs for a brand-new station. We are very enthusiastic about the technology of the ELV, especially about the simple starting up after having gained negative experiences with the Conrad device telemetric weather station.

If you are also interested in such a station just click the advertisement banner which will direct you to the weather stations at e-bay. Maybe the same station is offered right now. If you join e-bay as a new customer and actually buy or even suction off something, than we'll earn something for procuring you, which, of course, would make us very happy.

...by the way: you can buy or auction off almost everything at e-bay. Just delete the word "weather station" in the advertisement banner and replace it by a word of your choice. Finally, click on Go!

The function of the station and its components

Measurements are sent wirelessly every 5 minutes from the sensors to the battery-operated display and additionally to the PC interface, which is also battery-operated. Actually, the display isn't necessary for the station. It's just for additional information. The PC interface can save data not called by the software maximally for 85 hours. With that, it is ensured no data gets lost in case of a power failure.

The outdoor sensors for temperature, humidity, wind force, direction of the wind and amount of rainfall work with accumulator buffered photo cells for the voltage supply. The indoor sensor for air pressure, inside temperature and humidity works with batteries.

Actually, data is to be transmitted over a distance up to 100 meters. In the test mode in my house in Alonia with walls of 60 cm thickness there are already problems after 5 meters. But if you search thoroughly a good position for the sensors it works.
Of course, we have mounted the temperature / humidity sensor in a shady place and the wind sensor is located on a radio mast of 3 metres height on the roof of the house of Dukas Hailas in Kamariotissa, with a height of about 10 metres. Because there is no higher building around, the wind can affect the sensor from all sides. There are also no receipt problems, because the house consists of hollow blocks of 12 cm thickness.

Normally, our second-hand PC processes received data quite well, although we don't know how long such a PC goes along with an uninterrupted operation of 24 hours. It's just a Pentium III with only 200 MHz but it has already a USB connection for the web cam.

The best about the weather station is the software WS-Win 32 by Werner Krenn which converts received data from the PC interface into tables, diagrams, data base files, internet capable diagram pictures and overviews. With the help of the parameters additional quantities like wind chill and thermal stress are calculated. Except of this, data can be additionally transmitted to weather services like www.weatherunderground.com.

Daily, the PC sends at 08:15am and at 06:00pm the weatherdata with FTP-Uploader via installed modem. It "lands" on our host www.samothraki.com.

Here are the parameters of the station which partially differ from the measuring ranges of the diagrams, because here it doesn't make a lot of sense to present a diagram with a range between -30 and +70 degrees Celsius.

Parameter Measuring range Resolution Tolerance
Temperature minus 30 degrees Celsius - plus 70 degrees Celsius 0.1 degrees Celsius +/- 1 degree
Air pressure 800 till 1100 hectopascal (hpa) 1 hpa +/- 1 hpa
Humidity 5 % till 95 % relative humidity 1 % +/- 4 %
Amount of rainfall 0 till 3999 millimetres (mm) per hour < 0.5mm +/- 1 mm
Wind direction 0 till 360 degrees 5 degrees +/- 5 degrees
Wind velocity 0 till 200 km/h 0.1 km/h +/- 1 km/h

After having clarified what I needed, I started with the purchase of the hardware and software:

As you see we have spared neither expense nor pains to make the Samothrace sites more attractive for you. The only thing we ask you, is  for some words in our guest book. Thank you!

But maybe you want to take your pick the matching room or hotel among our offers. Or you just want to have a look what tasty meals our restaurants have. The advertisers have allowed the realization of this weather site with their financial help.
