Bring her home: the Winged Victory of Samothrace in a ring, Samothraki since 1863

Come home, Nike.

The Winged Victory was found on Samothraki in 1863 and has stood in the Louvre ever since. Add your name to the call for her return, and wear the story: half of our profit from the Come Home collection goes to the island.

Retro travel poster: the headless Winged Victory sits at a café table by the sea with a suitcase, holding a postcard of Samothraki. "Come home, Nike. Samothraki misses you since 1863."

Why she belongs on Samothraki

  • She was found on Samothraki on 13 April 1863, in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, by Charles Champoiseau, the French vice-consul at Adrianople. He shipped her to Paris.
  • She has stood in the Louvre since 1864, at the top of the Daru staircase. Her ship's-prow base, carved from grey Rhodian marble, followed in 1879.
  • Carved in Parian marble around 200 to 190 BC, she is 2.75 metres tall: the goddess of victory landing on the prow of a warship, her robes pressed by the sea wind.
  • Greece has asked for her return, so far without success. In 2013 the deputy minister of culture said Greece was ready to care for her if she came back.
  • Today an exact copy in Thasian marble, cut from the Louvre's 3D scans, stands at the Archaeological Museum of Samothrace. The island still waits for the original.

You can stand where she stood: the Sanctuary of the Great Gods.

Add your name

We will deliver the names to the Municipality of Samothraki and the island's associations with the open letter below, and share the total with the press. Your name is never shown on this page; only the count is.

Where the money goes

Half of our profit from every item in the Come Home collection is set aside for the culture and heritage of Samothraki. We have written to the Municipality and the island's associations to agree who receives it and for which projects; until then it is kept apart, and every amount is published here.

Set aside so far: €0.00 (the collection opened on 11 October 2026)

Want to give directly? Donations open as soon as a group on the island confirms how to receive them. Tick the box above and we will email you that day.

Our open letter

To the Municipality of Samothraki, the Cultural Association of Samothraki "Saonisos" and the Association of Samothracians of Evros "The Victory of Samothrace"

Dear friends,

Samothraki.com is an independent guide to the island, made by a local. We are starting "Come home, Nike", a campaign for the return of the Winged Victory of Samothrace from the Louvre to the island, with designs, clothes and posters that tell her story to the world.

We commit to giving half of our profit from the Come Home collection to the culture and heritage of Samothraki, and to publishing the amounts on this page. We would like the money to go to projects we choose together, and we ask which of you can receive it, and how.

We also ask for your support: to co-sign the call, to share it, and to tell us how we can help your own work for the Victory and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods.

With respect,
