Camping on Samothraki: the rules
- Can I camp for free on Samothraki?
- No. Wild camping is illegal everywhere in Greece, and the island council restated the ban in August 2026. Fines start at €300 per person.
- Where can I camp?
- At Varades, the island’s only licensed campsite, on the north coast near Therma, 1 km from the Fonias trail. It is open from 15 May to 30 September and you don’t need to book.
- What does Varades have?
- About 105 pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes, hot showers, electricity, a café and a fridge for campers. The island bus stops at the gate.
- Is Platia still a free campsite?
- No. Platia, near Therma, was never a licensed campsite, and since 2025 it is no longer run as one. Camping there can be fined.
- Can I sleep in my campervan?
- You may sleep in a legally parked vehicle, but outside a campsite don’t put out an awning, tables or chairs, and never park overnight on beaches or in the forest.
