Samothraki before the Greeks
Mikro Vouni ("little mountain") is a low hill in the south-west of the island where archaeologists have uncovered one of the earliest settlements on Samothraki. It is seen as an early example of a proto-urban "town" in the Aegean, lived in from the Final Neolithic until late in the Middle Bronze Age.
Remains from the Late Bronze Age and three megalithic tombs from the Iron Age have also been found in the area. The island's last pre-Greek population was Thracian, and its language survived as the ritual language of the cult of the Great Gods until the 1st century BC: a link between this hill and the Sanctuary at Palaiopoli.
Visiting
Mikro Vouni is an excavation site rather than an organised visitor attraction; check locally whether it can be visited. For the island's ancient story, combine it with the Archaeological Museum and the Sanctuary of the Great Gods.
